When does menopause begin?

Perimenopause begins in the years before you reach menopause. During perimenopause, your hormone levels randomly fluctuate, causing changes in your menstrual periods. Your periods could be shorter, longer, lighter, or heavier than usual. You could also skip periods.

You reach menopause when estrogen production drops, you stop ovulating, and haven’t had a period for 12 consecutive months.

The average age of menopause is 52 years. However, you can go through the transition any time between the ages of 40-58.

What symptoms occur during menopause?

The most common menopause symptoms — hot flashes, night sweats, and mood swings — may last longer than you anticipate. About half of all women have these symptoms for seven years. However, they eventually disappear, with or without treatment.

The loss of estrogen causes other problems and symptoms that do not improve without treatment. Estrogen regulates many areas of your body.

Without enough estrogen, you may experience:

  • Vaginal dryness
  • Loss of sex drive
  • Pain during intercourse
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Memory problems
  • Bone loss (osteoporosis)
  • Dry skin
  • Hair loss
  • Insomnia
  • Weight gain
  • Depression

How is menopause managed?

If you have mild hot flashes, you may manage them by dressing in layers, carrying a small fan, and avoiding foods and beverages that cause problems. For example, spicy foods, alcohol, and caffeine often trigger hot flashes.

When you have moderate, severe, or long-lasting menopause symptoms, you may attain relief with hormone therapy that restores normal estrogen levels. In addition to relieving your symptoms, hormone therapy also helps prevent chronic conditions that occur after menopause, such as osteoporosis.

Beaumont WELLness for Women prescribes Biote® bioidentical hormone replacement therapy. Bioidentical hormones have the same molecular structure as the hormones produced in your body. As a result, they have similar effects.

Your Biote® treatment is customized to provide the dose you need. The hormones are packed into a small pellet that your provider implants under your skin. The pellet releases a steady level of hormones for several months.
